What is the history of ISTwente?
The International School Twente (ISTwente) opened in 2008, initially as the international department of the Dutch primary Prinseschool which is part of Stichting Consent. In 2016, ISTwente primary was accorded its own building at Johannes ter Horststraat in Enschede.

In 2011, the Dutch secondary school Het Stedelijk Lyceum (HSL) opened a department at College Zuid for international secondary education. ISTwente primary and secondary joined hands in 2016 and offers international education to pupils aged 4 to 18 years of age.

My family is moving to Twente. Who can help me with matters such as housing, work, tax, healthcare and other important matters?

My family will be moving to Enschede mid-year. Is it possible for my child to start school?
The ISTwente learners community is exceptionally welcoming. ISTwente often receives children mid-year and takes appropriate measures to make sure these children can keep up. Newcomers are welcomed to the class as a whole, and teachers often assign a buddy to guide them during the first week.

My child has difficulty with various subjects. How can ISTwente support
At ISTwente, teachers differentiate their instruction for students' learning needs, adjusting the programme where necessary to ensure students are able to achieve a learning outcome. In the case of students with exceptional needs, we have a teacher in place as part of our SEN procedure. At ISTwente secondary, students can call on their teachers or mentors with specific questions, or make use of the extra tutoring services of the Bijlesnetwerk:

My child does not speak English, is this an issue?
Not at all! Over 90% of the students at ISTwente speak a language other than English at home, and those students that do speak English now learned it while at ISTwente. Our teachers are adept at differentiating instruction for newcomers to English. My child is not yet four years old. Is there a nearby bilingual preschool he/she can attend?

My child is a competitive athlete, how is this supported by ISTwente?
ISTwente prides itself as a TopSport Talent School enabling students to be at the top of their game, while receiving the best possible education and a flexible roster.

Physical Education
At ISTwente primary, gym class is given twice a week. Once with a professional gym teacher at our off site gym, and once with the classroom teacher in our on-site gym. At ISTwente secondary Physical Education is with our PE teacher Ms. Marjolein van der Pol.

Is there any cancellation fee at ISTwente?
At ISTwente we do not charge cancellation fees. For inflow and outflow of students during the course of the year, the school charges school fees based on the following table:

Are students at ISTwente required to wear school uniforms?
Students at ISTwente do not wear school uniforms, but their own clothing. The wearing of expensive jewelry is not recommended.

Is lunch provided at ISTwente?
Students bring their own lunch to school and healthy eating is promoted. At ISTwente secondary there is also a cafeteria within our Dutch parent school Het Stedelijk Lyceum - College Zuid where students can buy lunch or a snack.

When applying for or visiting ISTwente primary/secondary, what are the requirements?
Before admitting new students, the head(s) of school would like to have access to report cards of the previous two years (where applicable). At secondary the level of English is also of importance and may be tested where required. In addition, it is necessary to establish the level of the student and to learn more about the curriculum and subjects the student is following.

When applying for admission, the school requires the following documents:

  • passport copy/copies of the parent(s) and/or guardian(s);

  • passport copy of the student;

  • photograph of the student;

  • educational records (if applicable) such as report cards, a letter from school, certificates etc.;

  • medical records (if applicable).

Can minors traveling alone apply for education at ISTwente?
Minors who wish to study at ISTwente, must be accompanied by a responsible adult when moving to the Netherlands. Students traveling on their own must apply for a study visa with the Dutch government. Dutch law sometimes requires a Dutch citizen or organisation to 'sponsor' an applicant.

Can ISTwente help with obtaining visa (mvv permit)?
ISTwente is able to present a confirmation of registration, however we do not sponsor visa applicants, nor do we offer boarding. For support in visa applications, students can contact the Expat Center Twente (  located in Hengelo or the Immigration and Naturalisation Department : (



At what age can my child go to school?
Children can be accepted at ISTwente from the day they turn four years of age. This means that children start at our school at various moments throughout the year. From the age of five years old, education is compulsory according to Dutch Law.

Which curriculum is taught at ISTwente primary?
ISTwente Primary offers the International Primary Curriculum in combination with numeracy and literacy from the British National Curriculum.  Subjects of the IPC include History, Geography, Science, Art, Design, Technology, ICT, Physical Education (PE), Music, Society and International Perspectives. My child is currently attending an IB school. Will the switch to IPC be a difficult one?
IB and IPC are closely related, as the IPC programme was created by a group of IB teachers. Particularly at ISTwente, the IPC has a strong inquiry-based approach which will be quite familiar to IB students.

Does ISTwente primary offer any extra-curricular activities?
ISTwente primary offers a range of extracurricular activities. These activities are not included in the school fees and cost between EUR 2.00 - EUR 5.00 per day depending on the activity.

Several activities are:

Does ISTwente primary offer after school care?

Which curriculum is taught at ISTwente secondary?
ISTwente secondary offers the International Cambridge Curriculum to years 7 to 11. In year 9, children choose their subjects for their IGCSE’s and take their Checkpoint tests. This school year, 2017/2018, ISTwente has enrolled the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP 1) in year 12.  In addition, year 12 and year 13 students can take their AS and A levels for this final year. In school year 2018/2019, the AS and A levels will be fully replaced by IB DP 1 and 2.

Do new students applying for admission to ISTwente secondary have to take an entrance exam?
Students applying for admission to ISTwente secondary do not have to take an entrance exam to enter our school. Please note however that before starting at ISTwente, our head of secondary and Career Counsellor conduct an intake with new students, in order to discuss the subjects they are taking, their grades and the level of their English, this being the main language spoken at ISTwente. If deemed necessary the level of English may be tested.

What are the school fees for education at ISTwente secondary and what is included?
As a public school, ISTwente is officially recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Education, which contributes funds to the school. These government funds cover approximately half of the actual costs. Parents are therefore required to pay school fees, which are charged annually in advance, to cover all other remaining expenses. The school fees cover all study materials including books and the loan of a Chromebook at our secondary location. Exam costs are not included in the fee, and an additional amount of EUR 70.00 is charged for excursions and activities. Are students at ISTwente supported with regards to Careers Advice?
Careers Advice at ISTwente is provided by our Careers Counsellor Ms. Esther Dommerholt and commences at an early age. Also, IB DP students are supported by our IB DP Coordinator Ms. Anke Kolkman. For more information, please see our Careers Advice page on the website.
